So where is all this dirt coming from? And how is the project saving $800,000 in soil costs, and reducing the environmental impact of trucking so much dirt?

Look no further than the SAM expansion in the heart of downtown, only one mile and less than 5 minutes away. The trucks get loaded at the top of the excavation site, then head up 1st to Broad and down to the OSP site.

The excavation is amazing to see from above. Here are two views, looking east from the parking structure across 1st Ave, and looking NW from the SE corner of the lot on 2nd Ave. Both views show the long, L-shaped conveyor moving dirt up from several stories below.

There is a sculpture-like bracing installation in the NE corner, and fascinating chronologic markings on the support beams, indicating the dates incremental depths were reached.
