Early last month, workers discovered a Mallard duck nesting on the property, inside the fence at Elliott and Broad, at the foot of the Groove. They quietly put a barrier around the nest and notified Chris Rogers, SAM's Director of Capital Projects.
This morning, when the last of eleven ducklings emerged from their shells, Chris put his escort plan in motion, and the mother duck had her family on the move.
Workers on the site were alerted, an engineer communicated with approaching trains, traffic was stopped, and the trek was underway.
Through the lot, onto the street, across the tracks, past the workers, she guided her ducklings hundreds of yards through the site and into the water at the pocket beach where they swam to the shelter of Pier 70.
